Entrepreneur and Overnight Success
Merriam-Webster dictionary defines entrepreneur as one who organizes, manages, and assumes the risks of a business or enterprise. Entrepreneur also describes someone with enough energy and foresight to overcome any obstacle life throws at them. Alycia Johnson of Houma, Louisiana is a true entrepreneur. She is the creator of the wildly popular LAD boutique portable hair straightener, the Glamour Iron.
Her story is amazing. Alycia was rushing to an event after work, when she found herself in need of a flat iron for her hair, with no time to rush home. This led to a fortuitous venture that would change her life. The idea was simple: a hair straightener that you could power up in your car to help you out in those tight spots. The concept was there, but now it was time to manufacture the actual product. A friend, Alfred Wicks, offered to help the startup financially. He simply asked how much she would need. When she responded with a mere $500, he wrote the check right away.
Upon launching her product online in December 2015, the first month sales reached $12,000. This was a shock, even to Alycia. It seemed there was a greater demand for the product then she realized. The first thing she did was pay Alfred back for his generous contribution that had started it all. The business only grew from there. In 2016, Glamour Iron delivered $567,000 in sales. At the young age of 27, Alycia was now a successful entrepreneur and she was on the radar. She caught the eye of celebrities, such as K. Michelle, who wanted custom made portable flat irons. She’s even created custom Glamour Irons for cheerleaders of various NFL teams with their team’s logo on them.
Alycia contributes her success to the solid foundation she received from Vanderbilt Catholic High School in Houma, Louisiana. As a student at the college prep school, Alycia took classes that taught her valuable tools she would use later on to create the empire. “I was overwhelmed, but I knew what to do and how to deal with it even though I wanted to do everything by myself,” Alycia explains.
Alycia adheres to is the importance of giving back to her community. Whether that be in consulting others, or simply answering questions that might help others in the community do better for themselves. In line with giving back, she refuses to manufacture her product outside of the U.S. “I could go outside the country and get it for a cheaper price, but I feel like I would be taking away from somebody’s family in the United States.”
If there’s anything we can take away from Alycia’s story, it’s that focus and hard work pays off in the long run. “There’s nothing wrong with going to the club. [But] you just spent all that money every week that you go the club. [Take it] and reinvest in yourself.”
So what does the future look like for Alycia Johnson? In just a couple of words, “very bright.” She’s currently working with BMW and Mercedes-Benz to create apparel using their logo. This is part of a new company she created, Foreign Kloset. With her incredible success story and dedication, Alycia is a role model for anyone chasing their dreams. But as Alycia so modestly puts it, “I’m not a hero, I’m a hair-o!”
