Dr. Steve Morgan

“He Cares”

Dr. Steve Morgan goes the extra mile to demonstrate that he cares. As a recent graduate of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, and only one of four African-American doctors in his class, Dr. Morgan has faced his share of adversity. He has a keen focus on the health of all humanity, which stems from his interest in science as a child. With the fate of healthcare in the United States being tested, some may ask, “Are there doctors who really care?” Dr. Steve Morgan answers this question with a bold “yes,” despite the recent proposal by President Donald Trump that challenges the rights of American’s ability to treatment and health care.

Dr. Morgan saw firsthand that healthcare is based on social and/or financial status. “For example, if you’re underprivileged, you will not receive the healthcare you need,” Dr. Morgan states. Dr. Morgan also sheds light on citizens that are in need of mental health. Mental illness is often “swept under the rug.” He sees several mentally ill patients in the emergency room and believes that it’s an issue that should be taken more seriously. “We’ve been taught to ignore mental illness, but it needs to be treated properly so the person facing it can heal,” Dr. Morgan expresses.

Given the gift of healing, Dr. Morgan has developed a program that offers free healthcare to the homeless citizens in Cleveland, Ohio. With his focus on the community and not the government, he is able to save the local emergency rooms and patients a lot of money and time by providing medical care for the homeless. Because of his service, Dr. Morgan receives donations from the community of Rochester such as food, drinks and finances to provide and help support the less fortunate. “I’ve always liked to help people. I realized there are so many people who need help,” says Dr. Morgan. Creating a way to help American citizens obtain health care is admirable to Dr. Morgan. “I think a lot of advancements have been made in medicine. Obama has expanded Medicaid and now many people are more insured to receive care. That’s beautiful,” Dr. Morgan states.

The medical field is a household trend for the Morgan’s. Dr. Morgan’s wife, Chante, is also a recent graduate of the University of Rochester. They’ve both worked hard to achieve their goals while raising their son. The Morgan’s will be back in Louisiana in two years. When they get home, the Morgan’s plan to start a nonprofit organization that will help high school youths transition to college or obtain gainful employment in their field of interest. Dr. Morgan also plans on speaking in local churches in Louisiana to bring awareness to health and healing. Family and community involvement are top priorities for Dr. Morgan and he will continue to be a light for those around him. With the help of his family, Dean and fellow medical students, Dr. Steven Morgan has been able to withstand many obstacles and see his goals through. The Houma, LA native has proven that he has a genuine care for others.
